When I first heard of this audio recording – my first thoughts were that I hoped it wasn’t just another mass production of a bad tape or something. But I said yes to Jill Cramer – from HarperCollins – to receive a copy to review. And by today I am glad I didn’t refuse. This recording is rather extraordinary. It was made before ‘The Lord of the Rings’ was released, as the matter of fact – it helped him to promote and publish his book. The Original was recorded by J.R.R. Tolkien himself in 1952 and this release wich has been cutted to only have excerpts on it is of rather good quality. And listening to Tolkien himself telling the stories gives a whole new imagination. He tells wich such passion that you can’t resist on sitting down and listen to his voice and then find your self far away in these lands.

His world come to life through his voice. You look around to see if you still remain in your the real world, and finds out that actually the world changes around you and you are being brought into the land of Middle-Earth. Looking out from your hiding place you see Bilbo in a argue with Gollum, and at the next moment you find your self running from Nazgûls. But soon realize that it’s all a dream. But a good dream though – brought to life by Tolkien and his stories.

“Irresistible… The charming voice of Tolkien, bringing Middle English accenting to the craggy characters of Middle-Earth. Shows how much these works were born – and lived – in the creator’s imagination”

This will be a great gift to a Tolkien lover that already got ‘everything’. And it does suit both for younger people as well as ‘experienced’ readers. Also recommended for people who are thinking of starting to read a book by Tolkien, but aren’t quite sure what type of book that is. Listen to this – and I think you will manage to make up your mind.
