A translation of the Elvish name Apanónar, one of many terms used by them to refer to the race of Men. ‘Afterborn’ is simply a reference to the fact that Men awoke into the World many thousands of years after the Elves, and for the same reasons they are also referred to as Hildor (’Aftercomers’), and as the Younger Children of Ilúvatar.

One of the many names for the race of Men, who awoke long after the Elves, the Firstborn. ‘Aftercomers’ is a translation of the Elvish name Hildor, a word also seen in the name Hildórien, the Land of the Hildor, the eastern region where the first Men awoke into the World. One of the three mariners who sailed the oceans with Eärendil. With his companions Erellont and Falathar, he was aboard the famed ship Vingilot when it travelled into the West and carried Eärendil and Elwing to Aman. Those two were allowed to remain because of their Elvish blood. Aerandir and his companions, however, were not permitted to remain West of the Sea, and were returned into the east by the Valar. The name Aerandir comes from the Elvish for ‘Sea-wanderer’.

Tarn in eastern Dorthonion – a clear blue mountain lake in the highlands of Dorthonion (Taur-nu-fuin), the headquarters of Barahir’s outlaw band. It was said that its clear waters were hallowed by Melian herself. Barahir and his outlaw band fled here after the Dagor Bragollach.

(S.: ‘lake-twilight’) Region of Doriath, the stretch of the River Sirion between the inflow of Aros and the Falls. The river here branched into many marshes and pools through which the border guard of Doriath ran ferries. These were lands heavy with enchantment, both from the Girdle of Melian guarding Doriath to the north, but also from the power of Ulmo that was strong in Sirion’s waters. It was here that Turgon and Finrod were given the idea of building their hidden strongholds at Gondolin and Nargothrond; an idea placed in their dreams by Ulmo.

The Aelin-uial was under the control of the Sindarin Kingdom of Doriath. Thingol’s marchwardens maintained secret ferries among the reeds, so that they could cross between Sirion’s easten and western banks unregarded, if need be. At the southern end of the Aelin-uial, Sirion’s waters collected together once more from the many paths they took through the marshland and, at the place called the Falls of Sirion, fell in a thundering torrent down into the earth.

That part of the Aelin-uial that consisted of marshland, rather than lakes, is referred to as the Fens of Sirion.

Aeglos

A tall, thorny plant, apparently related to modern gorse, but somewhat larger than that plant. Its sweet-smelling flowers were white, and from them it took its name: aeglos is Elvish for ‘Snowthorn’. It was found on the slopes of Amon Rûdh in West Beleriand and surely elsewhere, but if it ever grew east of the Blue Mountains, it is no longer found today. Aeglos shares its name with the famous Spear of Gil-galad, but it isn’t clear whether the two names are directly connected with one another.

(S.: ‘fell fire’) (d. FA 455) Noldorin Elf of the House of Finrod, fourth son of Finarfin. He returned to Middle-Earth with the host of Fingolfin because of his friendship with Fingon, and he settled on the northern slopes of Dorthonion with his brother Angrod. Aegnor was slain by the fires from Thangorodrim during Dagor Bragollach. The Quenya form of his name was Aikanáro.

Aeluin
