A great-grandson of Gerontius, the Old Took, Adelard’s father was Flambard Took. He had five children of his own, including Reginard and Everard. Like most of the Took clan, Adelard had a heroic name: in his case, Adelard comes from a Teutonic word meaning ‘resolute’or ‘courageous’.

Adelard was a regular visitor to Bag End, and was apparently well known for taking Bilbo’s umbrellas. After the Farewell Party, Adelard was left the gift of an umbrella of his own. He lived on through the War of the Ring, and died in the second year of the Fourth Age, at the age of ninety-five.

Etymology

Adelard (lit. noble-hard) comes from a Teutonic word meaning “resolute” or “courageous”.

The wife of Gerontius, the famous Old Took, Adamanta was the mother of twelve children over a period of no less than thirty years. Those twelve children gave rise to many branches of the Took family, and Bilbo, Frodo, Merry and Pippin could all trace their ancestry back to Adamanta through different lines. Two of her sons would become Thain of the Shire: Isengrim, the eldest, and Isumbras. Two others left the Shire on mysterious adventures: these were Hildifons and Isengar (Isengar was the youngest of Adamanta’s twelve children).

The eldest son of Gundahar Bolger and Dina Diggle. As the eldest son of an eldest son, it seems that Adalgar would have become head of the Bolger family after his father’s death in III 2875 (though the complexities of Hobbit traditions mean that his mother Dina may have held this position for some years before Adalgar himself succeeded). As head of the family, Adalgar would have lived at the family seat of Budgeford in Bridgefields.

Adalgar was the father of three children: Rudigar, Rudibert and Ruby. Of these, Ruby married Fosco Baggins, and became the grandmother of Frodo Baggins. Thus Adalgar was one of Frodo’s great-grandfathers (though in fact he had passed away some years before Frodo was born).

The only son of Hildigrim Took, who was in turn the fourth child of the famous Old Took. Adalgrim himself had four children, including Paladin Took, his only son. During most of Adalgrim’s lifetime, the Thain of the Shire was his first cousin Ferumbras III. However, Ferumbras never married, and after his death the inheritance of the Thainship passed by circuitous routes through Hildigrim’s line of descent. If Adalgrim had survived his cousin, he would have become Thain himself, but as events unfolded it was his son Paladin who inherited the title to become Thain Paladin II. In time the Thainship passed on to Adalgrim’s grandson, the famous Peregrin Took.

Adalgrim was a cousin of Bilbo Baggins, although he did not attend Bilbo’s farewell Birthday Party in TA 3001.
