(S.: “ship maker”) Elf, one of the wisest of the Sindar, in the First Age lord of the Falas, a mariner and shipwright. Círdan long avoided the quarrels of the Noldor and Sindarin and was especially friendly with Elwë, who was probably his overlord, and Finrond. The Falas, with its havens of Eglarest and Brithombar, prospered until FA 474, when it was overrun. Círdan withdrew to the Isle of Balar, and for the rest of the First Age succoured the remnants of the Elves and Edain of Beleriand, notably Gil-galad and Elwing. He built Vingilot for Eärendil.

In the Second and Third Ages Círdan was Lord of the Grey Havens and possessed Narya, one of the Three Rings, from its making until he gave it to Gandalf when the latter came to Middle-Earth, Círdan fought against Sauron with the army of the Last Alliance, and in the Third Age frequently aided the Dúnedain of the North. He was also a member of the White Council. It is said that he remained in Middle-Earth, serving with his wisdom and his ships, until the sailing of the last white ship sometime in the Fourth Age.

Círdan was very tall; at the end of the Third Age he had a long beard and looked old.

(S.: “royal maiden”) (TA 241 – FO 121) Eldarin princess, daughter of Elrond and Celebrían. For nearly three thousand years, she lived in contentment in Imladris and Lórien, until in 2951 she met Aragorn in Rivendell. In 2980 they plighted their troth on Cerin Amroth, and after the War of the Ring they were wed, and Arwen became Queen of Gondor. She bore her husband one son, and a number of daughters. However, by marrying Aragorn she chose not to accompany her father over Sea at the end of the Third Age, and thus became mortal. After Aragorn died in FO 120, Arwen went to Lórien, where she died the next winter. Her grave was made on Cerin Amroth.

Arwen was noted for her dark beauty, which was said to resemble that of Lúthien. Because of this beauty, which was never again to appear among the Elves in Middle-Earth, she was called Undómiel, or in Westron, Evenstar, and she was known as the Evenstar of her people.
